Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and/or VRC Intern

The Department of Labor and Industries requires a two-year internship for new Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors (VRC).  They are required to work under the guidance and supervision of an experienced VRC until their internship is complete.  Once complete, the intern must pass a national certification to become registered with The Department of Labor and Industries.

VRC Intern Minimum Hiring Requirements

  • All of the above VRC Intern requirements
  • Certified Disability Management Specialist (CDMS) and/or Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) credential.
  • Two years of full-time experience in industrial insurance.
  • Meet with clients to gather vocational information.
  • Meet with employers to discuss return to work options and collect data to prepare job analyses.
  • Meet with medical providers to establish client’s specific medical restrictions and ability to work.
  • Perform labor market research related to employability trends and outlook.
  • Determine eligibility for further services and whether vocational retraining is appropriate.
  • Develop retraining plans for clients and monitoring the implementation of the client’s retraining plan.
  • Assist clients in the job seeking process including the development of resumes, developing interviewing skills and referring clients to other resources when available.
  • Case management.

Our Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors offer case management expertise managing claims for injured workers referred to us by the Department of Labor and Industries and other contracted agencies or individuals who need help cultivating their job-seeking skills to transition back to work.  Typical job responsibilities include:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree – Preferred in Psychology, Counseling or Human Services. 
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Clean criminal background.
  • Excellent computer skills, (Proficient in keyboarding, MS Windows, MS Word, and comfortable learning new computer software quickly.)
  • Strong analytical abilities and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and writing skills.
  • A positive can-do attitude and strong work ethic.
